DIY Handmade Jewellery Display for Craft Fairs and Markets

One of my New Years Resolutions is to attend more events to promote my business, such as trade shows, craft fairs etc so I thought I would show you this tutorial that I made last year for a fabulously sparkly DIY jewellery display made out of any old photo frame. It’s great for displaying your jewellery at home or even at craft markets and fairs and cost me about £3 to make!

You will need:

  1. Old Photo Frame (I actually picked 2 of these up from the 99p shop – they are very cheap and thin plastic but you can’t tell once they are painted)
  2. Acrylic Paint – 2 contrasting colours of your choice
  3. Glitter to match one of your paint colours.
  4. PVA Glue
  5. Gloss Varnish (Optional)
  6. Newspaper (to cover your work area)
  7. Paint brushes and a jar of clean water

Instructions:
  • First of all, cover the area you are working on in newspaper. It’s about to get a whole lot of messy up in here!
  • Take apart the photo frame, you won’t need the glass so put this somewhere safe (*CRAFTER TOP TIP: You can use the glass for your product photos by placing it over a white sheet of paper to create a nice shiny white background for your images)
  • Take the frame and paint it in the colour of your choice – I chose a really bright blue colour. Wait for this to dry (I left it an hour as I have really quick drying acrylic paints and got on with the next step whilst I was waiting for it to dry)
  • Once your frame has dried you can paint a layer of gloss varnish over the top. This is an optional step but it creates a nicer finish and will also make your frame more durable to wear and tear.
  • Take the back of the frame (in this case mine is made of cheap cardboard type stuff) and paint it in your contrasting colour. I chose a bright hot pink that matched my pink glitter. Wait for the paint to dry fully before continuing to the next step.
  • Once the paint has dried, cover the whole backing board with a think layer of PVA glue.
  • Sprinkle (I love that word) a thick later of glitter all over the glue until the whole thing is covered. Make sure there are no gaps. Leave to dry overnight.
  • Once your glitter background is completely dry, you can shake all of the excess glitter off. I usually do this by turning it upside down and knocking quite hard on the back. Make sure you have newspaper underneath, this way you can collect the leftover glitter and funnel it back into your pot (Waste not, want not!)
  • Cover the glitter background in a thin layer of PVA glue. Don’t worry – It will dry clear! This just acts as a sealant so you won’t be covered in glitter every time you touch the frame. Leave this to dry fully overnight.
  • Now you can put the frame back together without the glass. Leave the clips at the top open so that you can slide your jewellery in and secure it. Do not fasten the top clips onto your jewellery chain as this will damage it. The chain should be held in place as it is, but if you’re frame is a bit loose, you can put a drawing pin in the back of the board and hook your necklace chain over it so it won’t slip down, or use the slits to keep it secure.

Taadaa! A lovely, super bright and eye catching glittery jewellery display.

I’ve just got one necklace in mine, but you could add more by using the pin method above. Just place the pins in different places on the back of your board and your jewellery will hang at different lengths in the picture frame.

Here’s some more display stands that I made to give you some other ideas of what you could do with yours…

These old mini jewellery busts started off as a manky brown suede. Nothing a bit of glitter can't fix!

I hope this post has inspired you to make your own jewellery displays a little more interesting. Especially if you are like me and you sell at craft markets and events. Afterall, first impressions count!

Brighton Maker's Boutique Craft Fair

I've just heard through Facebook that the lovely Maker's Boutique are hosting some more craft markets in 2023. Yay!

I went to one of their events last year on my first trip to Brighton and had a blast. I brought a really cool doily coaster and little fridge magnets from KitschenLovers and a cute little bunny brooch and unicorn print from my favourite stall holder of the day Little Things I Make.

The organisers also let me roam around the event with my two little dogs which was really nice as it was held in a church hall and usually the little ones aren't allowed in places like that.

If you live locally and get a chance to check out any of their markets then please do as they are really worth it. I had a blast last time and can't wait to go back to Brighton again for a visit. I might just plan my next trip around one of the fairs so I can go and do some more indie shopping :)

Cupcakes for Dogs! Peanut Butter & Carrot PUPcakes

Dog Friendly Cupcakes

We all know that humans LOVE cupcakes. They are everywhere you look these days so it seems a bit unfair that dogs should miss out on all the cupcake fun. I've been making PUPCor FURRYcakes, whichever you want to call them, since I found the recipe for Bambi's birthday a few years ago and they've always gone down well. We've served them at puppy parties and even taken them to the park with us to share with Bambi and Bear's friends so when I was a bit bored this Bank Holliday Weekend I thought I would make them again.

The ingredients are usually things that you would have in your cupboard or fridge anyway, so they are really easy to rustle up as a last minute treat for your little ones.

The recipe below usually makes about 24 Peanut Butter and Carrot cakes, but as I only have 2 dogs that seemed a bit much for me and I didn't want to waste any food so I decided to make up the full amount, pop the rest into freezer bags and save them in the freezer for another rainy weekend.

Recipe:
1 cup white or whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup shredded carrots
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup honey
1 egg

Directions:
•Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C)
•Mix the flour, baking soda and egg all together in a bowl.

•Add the rest of the ingredients and stir well.

•Put a teaspoon of the mixture into each paper cake case or use a greased baking tin.

•Put in the oven for approximately 15 minutes.

Once the PUPcakes are ready and have cooled down you can ice them by using nonfat cream cheese as a frosting, but I chose not to do that this time, mainly because I only had full-fat cream cheese in the fridge.

They have gone down very well with my chihuahuas, Bambi even licked the crumbs off the matt! Don't forget to take them out of the paper casing before you give them to your dogs though.

If you liked this tutorial I'll be showing you show to make PUPsickles,  which are a great way to give your dogs a treat and keep them cool in the summer months, all at the same time.

If you try out this recipe for yourself, please send me some pictures of your dogs enjoying their pupcakes. I'd love to see them!
